PlayItLoud! What a great find. Subtle, but engaging compositions, each playing their own part, but extraordinair combined. Another example of the surprises you encounter when exploring french musicians....... Favorite track: Cinquième Branche.
Engelram

Engelram Too often, electro-acoustic music refers to artificial patchworks of intrumental samples and electronic beats. But here, the mariage of the two worlds is seamless and natural. Each artist brings the best of the other and both breath the same air. The end-result is surprisingly light, coherent and organic.

Scott The boxed edition is a gorgeous presentation of a very engaging album; the concept of "branches" is a neat way of exploring creativity and the interaction of the natural and artificial worlds. Very nice performances by both artists and Mingueza's photos are just right for the project. Dronarivm has impressed me with yet another high-quality release. Favorite track: Deuxième Branche.
Utu Lautturi
Utu Lautturi thumbnail
Utu Lautturi Rarely have I heard such a tangible union, such complementing energies between musicians even in a live setting. Such as when Secq’s guitar flows as if imitating frolicking children in long grass, and Tui decorates their surroundings in digital glitter, or after Tui breathes a thick breeze of distortion through the leaves, how Secq responds by first speeding up and then letting his notes linger.

about

Branches came into being during a long time planned project between Tui (Orla Wren) and Cyril Secq (member of the band Astrïd). Having worked together when Cyril contributed guitar to the Orla Wren's previous albums the idea then formed to do something further and even more collaborative. At the same time, Cyril had recorded many guitar parts, as a 'solo' project, that had never been released. And they were the basis, the bones for Orla to work, completely free.

It's a duet between acoustic strings and processing, field recordings, edits and organic arrangements.
This music is steadily ramifies, growing out of itself like a wild tree. The tunes woven together and untwine again as a branches shaken by the wind. It sounds focused, calm and distinct. Although everything has been done in distant places (France and Scotland) the result sounds like two musicians experimenting in the same room, sharing their background and culture.

The beautiful photographic work from Spanish born Nieves Mingueza brought the whole project together in the form of these two very special editions of Branches.
